This slideshow looks at what we can and can't know about the nature of the world we perceive.

Reality

I know I exist. I perceive a world, though I don’t know everything about the world.

I don’t know whether my world is real or virtual (e.g. a virtual reality fed to my brain by a computer), and therefore I don’t know whether anyone else exists in the way I do. But it doesn’t matter: it makes no difference to me either way.

Everything I do is aimed at improving the pleasure-pain balance – primarily now but also in the future, primarily for me but also for other people.

To do this most effectively, I need to know and understand my world as much as possible. Evidence, observation and reason are the most effective ways of doing this.
